Mosquito Traps in Wimberley Test Positive for West Nile Virus
The Hays County Health Department says that several mosquito traps collected from two sites in the 78676 area code have tested positive for West Nile Virus. They're the first positive tests this year in Hays County, most likely attributable to our relatively abundant rains.
You can do your part to keep the virus from spreading. Drain any standing water on your property, reducing the number of places where mosquitoes can lay eggs and breed. Wear insect repellents that have DEET as an active ingredient and wear long, loose, and light-colored clothing when outdoors.
It's no reason to panic -- it's a fairly common virus, with 913 positive sites identified last year in Texas, with 90 confirmed virus cases in people. It's important to note that 80% of people will not experience symptoms of an infection. The 20% who do may experience some symptoms similar to the flu. Just be aware!
